A Blessed Interruption

Yesterday, the UPS man brought a most exciting interruption to all our packing endeavors ... our Amazon order arrived with summer reading for the whole family!  I'll let you guess which book belongs to each of us ;)

Related to our packing-type endeavors, I will probably be unable to blog for the next week or so what with the packing, moving, setting up new internet, and most of all, a visit from my parents!  WHOOPIE!!!!!  So, I'll see you next week with an update on our adventures!

Happy Fathers Day!

We had a great Fathers Day around here - I hope you did too!

This is Daddy and Benjamin watching their new "baby sports" video while Mommy made eggs for breakfast (which is very special for a Sunday morning, cuz usually we just grab cold cereal before heading out the door).  Benjamin has only watched a little baby video a few times when he was having horrible teething days, so this was a real treat, and as you can tell, I think he enjoyed it!

We went out to lunch with friends, then came home, took naps, and I made a cherry pie (not quite as good as Grandma's, but it sufficed).  Benjamin even gave Daddy a new mug with his picture on it for him to take to work!  so sweet of him, don't you think?

We didn't get any packing done, but well, it was Fathers Day and we just enjoyed it.

One Year Ago

Exactly one year ago today, we pulled out of Jackson ... us, my pregnant belly, all our earthly belongings crammed into the biggest moving truck I have ever seen, and my 3 houseplants (only 2 of them lived to tell about it) .  We left the city in which we had gone to college, met, dated, married, worked, celebrated - in short, lived - and headed out for a whole new city that I had never even seen before (Will had only seen the airport, the food court at the mall, and his future place of employment).

We had no stinkin' idea what we were getting ourselves into.

I distinctly remember driving down (up?) I40 singing to myself the old Steven Curtis Chapman song "The Great Adventure" (oh wait, what's that, huney?  you're saying I sang it out loud?) ... saddle up your horses, we got a trail to blaze, whoa-oa-oa-oooo, to the wild blue yonder of God's amazing grace ... cheesy, I know.  I could go on with the lyrics, but you get the general idea.

But ya know?  if you'll indulge me, that's kinda what this year has been - the wild blue yonder of God's amazing grace.  There were a list of things we needed - new doctors, taking care of our house in TN, new church - the seemingly endless list of stuff you have to figure out in a new place.

And here we are, one year later.  We know people - I have even run into people I know out in public - without meaning to!  shocker!  We like it here.  I even got a good haircut over the weekend!

God's grace has carried us through what could have been the worst year of our lives and made it one of the best.  I could say more, but Benjamin will be up early in the morning, so I'll close with this song that stuck with me through all of 2009's bumps, curves, and blindsides ...

By Your Side, by Tenth Avenue North

Why are you striving these days
Why are you trying to earn grace
Why are you crying
Let me lift up your face
Just don't turn away

Why are you looking for love
Why are you still searching as if I'm not enough
To where will you go child
Tell me where will you run
To where will you run

And I'll be by your side
Wherever you fall
In the dead of night
Whenever you call
And please don't fight
These hands that are holding you
My hands are holding you

Look at these hands and my side
They swallowed the grave on that night
When I drank the world's sin
So I could carry you in
And give you life
I want to give you life

Cause I, I love you
I want you to know
That I, I love you
I'll never let you go
Amen.

And so it begins...

We have begun packing. My mom reminded me that they are coming in JUST TWO SHORT WEEKS to help us move and, by cracky, as Granny used to say, I had better get moving (no pun intended. haha). So, after spending half of Saturday trying to find the tape gun, we are now officially packing. So far, I've packed the Trautman Family Library, Benjamin's outgrown/out-of-season clothes, and our winter gear ... who knew I would ever live in a place where I would have to pack up a huge bin of winter gear? coats, snow boots, even an electric blanket for the car (truth be told, i had that electric blanket in TN :)

The thing about packing to move is not so much that I dislike the process itself. After all, I really enjoy organizing, sorting, and getting rid of stuff we don't need. But when my surroundings are in disorder, as is unavoidable during moving, my insides seem to be in disarray as well. Like yesterday when I went to the grocery store for just a few things, one of the primary ones being apple cider vinegar, then while checking out, realized I had completely forgotten it. So, I had to go out to the car, put the first set of stuff in, then go back into the store for the vinegar. This wouldn't have been so bad except that I was frustrated and in a hurry, so I cut across the front of the store with my cart (ya know how those infant carriers sitting in the cart obstruct your line of sight? well, they do.) and ran smack dab into a store employee's stocking bin. Not only did the crash make a pretty loud racket, I made a pretty loud shriek, drawing the attention of everyone in a 15-ft radius (which was a lot). Great. That's just one example of how my brain is already starting to go, what with the disorder around here, minimal though it may be at this point.

So, i think what I'm learning is that my sanity hangs on by a pretty fine thread.

Everyone who knows me is wondering what the big revelation is.

In other news, Benjamin turned 8 months old yesterday! crazy how time flies. He still has not quite mastered crawling, but he can make it halfway across the living room before you know it, just scooting on his belly.

That about does it for today ... I'm tired. I've been reading lots of good books and cooking lots of good recipes, so hopefully I'll have the brain power to post some of those on here soon!

Happy Wednesday!
